The degree programme is an artistic-applied course  that teaches comprehensive design basics in the first two semesters. From the third semester onwards, students specialise in one of the three main areas of study: scenography, costume or experimental design. An interdisciplinary exchange between the specialisations also takes place in the "Freestyle" project in the seventh semester. The specialisation in scenography trains students for work in theatre and related theatrical areas, where both stage sets and narrative spaces for staged action are invented.

The specialisation in costume design trains costume designers for all areas of literary, musical and dance theatre as well as for film and television. The Experimental Design specialisation trains freelance designers for various artistic and applied professional fields, such as experimental design, design processes in social contexts and design in public spaces.

The degree programme is divided into two sections. During the first stage (1st year), the focus is on basic artistic training (painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, sculpture, performance, film, printmaking, typography). Practice is tested in artistic projects. In the second part of the programme (2nd-4th year), students concentrate on their chosen specialisation. In accordance with the focus, application-oriented semester projects are carried out here, which are supplemented by in-depth theoretical and practical courses.

The study programme stands for a high degree of practical orientation. Practical exercises in small groups are supplemented by lectures and seminars. Project work, excursions and guest lectures provide a link to current developments. Another important component is the one-semester practical phase or the semester abroad.

In addition to imparting subject-specific knowledge, the focus of teaching is on the development and promotion of students' social, cultural and personal competences. For this purpose, students are supported by an extensive number of teaching staff. Guest lectures and workshops by professionals from theory and practice complement the knowledge offered in the degree programme. The facilities at the Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts include functionally equipped seminar rooms, workshops, computer labs, a very well-equipped library as well as teaching and work rooms for students.

The Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts maintains numerous partnerships with universities abroad. Semesters abroad are explicitly supported and promoted with scholarships.

The study programme focusses on practice-oriented learning. Within each semester, practical projects are offered. The projects fit the respective professional focus. In addition, the students complete a practical semester related to the professional field within the study programme.

In the following areas, depending on the focus of study:
scenography: theatre, opera, related cultural institutions; 
costume design: national and international theatres and opera houses as well as film and television productions;
experimental design: design, art and culture, design projects in social contexts, museum education, adult education and related fields.

The Scenography - Costume - Experimental Design degree programme is a full-time course: eight semesters of standard study time including the practical phase/ semester abroad and the completion of a Bachelor's thesis.

The degree programme-related counselling sessions are announced on the website f3.hs-hannover.de/ske and take place in the Design Center. Attendance at the study advisory service is strongly recommended.
