Materials workshop
Monday to Thursday 10.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m.
Consultation by arrangement
Monday to Friday 10.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m.
Next.Materials is a material archive and creative workshop. Here, special materials such as aerogel, aluminium foam, acetylated wood and deep-drawable rattan, sintered glass and bio-plastics can be found alongside other samples of classic materials as well as design-relevant material innovations from the fields of metal, stone, plastics, plants, animal materials and textiles. Altogether, there are about 4,500 material samples in the workshop.
Material can be experienced here with all the senses and in some cases worked on experimentally. The workshop management supports research into creative material solutions in designs and imparts basic knowledge about material properties with special regard to sustainability and processing.
During opening hours, the material workshop can be freely used for material research. We are available for questions. For an intensive material consultation, it is advisable to make an appointment in advance by e-mail to hanna.niemeyer(at)hs-hannover.de.
In the material workshop you can find support for material research, ordering samples, workshops and material experiments. In addition, I always offer novelties from material research and development as well as trade fair novelties. We have contacts with a wide range of manufacturers as cooperation partners.
The material workshop offers two digital workstations within the opening hours as well as spacious work areas for material experiments / collages.
Materials can be researched in the material workshop via the material database of our cooperation partner RAUMPROBE in Stuttgart and samples can be ordered by arrangement. This service is available free of charge to students and teachers at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts. All others can use the database from their own PC with a membership of only 29 euros per year. Information is available at www.raumprobe.de.
A separate material database (www.next-materials.de) is being planned.
A material scanner is currently being created in the Materialwerkstatt. This is a cooperation project between the Media Design Informatics and Product Design degree programmes in collaboration with the Material Workshop.
The scanner makes it possible to create digital textures from existing material samples. These can be used for designs and presentations. Textures that have already been created are uploaded to the database and are available to students of Faculty III.
The available material samples can be borrowed for 24 hours for consultations or presentations upon presentation of the student ID. During examination periods, it is advisable to reserve in good time (2-3 weeks in advance) for this period; in the case of duplications, Bachelor's/Master's theses are given preference.
In exceptional cases, for example for Bachelor's/Master's exhibitions, the samples can also be borrowed for a longer period by arrangement.
During the course of studies, some private material samples accumulate. Anyone who wants to get rid of them is welcome to make them available to the material workshop.
