This programme involves artistically applied studies that cover general creative foundations in the first two semesters. From the third semester, students specialise in one of three major subjects: Scenography, Costume or Experimental Design. An interdisciplinary exchange among these major subjects takes place in the Freestyle project in the seventh semester. The Scenography major educates students to work in theatres and associated theatre-related areas, where both stage design and narrative space for staged performances are developed.

The Costume major educates aspiring costumers for all sectors of theatre based on literature, music and dance, as well as for film and television. The Experimental Design major educates independent designers for various artistic fields of work, for instance experimental design, design processes in social contexts and design in the public sphere.

The programme is divided into two study phases. In the first phase (the first year), a basic artistic education (painting, drawing, performance, film, graphic print, typography) takes centre stage. Practical training is tested in art projects. In the second study period (the second to the fourth years), students concentrate on their selected majors. Corresponding to the chosen content, students carry out practically oriented semester projects that are complemented by consolidating theoretical and practical courses.

Our programme is based on a great degree of hands-on orientation. Practical exercises complement lectures and seminars. Project work, excursions and lectures by external teachers from the PR industry ensure a connection to current developments in the field. A further important component is the one-semester internship phase or semester abroad.

Apart from conveying specialised knowledge, our teachers lay great value on fostering and developing students’ social, cultural and personal skills. Our teaching staff encourage and support all students. Guest lectures and workshops led by experts from theory and practice will complement our range of courses. Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts has functional seminar rooms, workshops, computer labs, a well-equipped library as well as teaching and working rooms, all of which are available to students.

Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts maintains many partnerships with postsecondary institutions outside Germany. Semesters abroad are expressly encouraged and supported with scholarships.

The programme is based on hands-on learning. Each semester offers practical projects that are anchored in the respective professional areas of concentration. In addition, students must undergo an internship semester during their studies.

Depending on the major subject, graduates can work in the following areas. In Scenography, they can work in theatre, opera or associated cultural institutions. In Costume, they can start careers in national and international theatres and opera houses or film and TV production. Experimental Design offers opportunities in design, arts and culture, design projects in social contexts, museum education, adult education and other related areas.

The Scenography – Costume – Experimental Design programme involves full-time study over eight semesters of regular study time. This includes the internship phase/semester abroad and completion of the bachelor project.

The study cost per semester amounts to the semester fee. This fee includes a student pass for the train and the Greater Hanover Transport Area (GVH).
