Interior design improves the quality and atmosphere of existing spaces by means of sound concepts and creative ideas. It is based on knowledge of the structural/energy-related relationships between architecture and the requirements for use. Therefore, our study programme involves an examination of people in their social and societal surroundings. Projects in the public, commercial and private spheres are planned and developed against a background of ecological, economic and social sustainability.

Students learn to take a methodical approach to examining new fields of work and finding creative solutions; these are vital components of a lasting education. The programme concentrates on project-oriented design. Apart from the development itself, a design involves conceptualising the technical feasibility (construction, building technology, energy concept), representation and presentation of the project.

In professional practice, cooperation and communication with clients as well as colleagues, specialised engineers, tradespeople and future users take centre stage. This is why our programme intensively supports and promotes both teamwork and group work. Above all, we focus on teaching design.

In the programme, design concepts for actual properties and the questions that arise are addressed in conjunction with the respective project partners from the areas of business or culture. This enables us to offer our students the greatest possible extent of practical and realistic learning without setting limits on their creative or innovative capacity. There are regular opportunities to take part in a variety of excursions to both national and international destinations in order to experience and discuss the impact of interior design in real-world situations.

The Design Center studios, workshops and laboratories are available for students to use for their practical work. The materials library has a comprehensive databank and will keep students up-to-date about new developments. In the computer laboratories, many of our Mac and PC devices are equipped with specific CAD software for interior designers. A photo studio and TV studio are also available. The Interior Design programme at Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts is characterised particularly by personal, intensive support from our teaching staff.

Internships abroad and study semesters in international metropoles – for our students, the world is within reach. They can spend at least one semester at one of our partner institutions outside Germany and even complete their subject-related internships abroad. Projects and excursions can take them around the globe. Teachers and students alike come from Europe and all over to the Design Center in order to teach, learn and work, to be creative together and make something new.

Over the course of the programme, students are expressly prepared for the job market. To this end, projects are closely practice-related and draw on future trends and developments. A practical semester in the second study phase will prepare them for everyday working life and help them find their way in the future work environment.

Our practice-based eight-semester study programme in Hanover will offer graduates excellent prospects in the broad field of work associated with interior design. The possibilities range from small and large offices devoted to architecture, interior design or engineering to design agencies that design exhibitions, lighting, films and events.

In addition, some of our graduates become self-employed and establish their own interior-design offices.

The Interior Design programme covers eight semesters and includes an internship phase that lasts at least 19 weeks. It offers both a well-grounded, practice-related education and training in interior design.

Moreover, Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts offers a two-semester master’s programme in Design and Media.

Guidance sessions that inform prospective students about the artistic aptitude test are announced on our website at www.studium-innenarchitektur.de and take place at the Design Center. We strongly recommend participating in one of these sessions. Every student pays a fee each semester. This fee includes a student pass for the Greater Hanover Transport  Area (GVH), a public transport pass for Lower Saxony, a student fee, membership in the Students’ Union and an administration fee.
