Phototojournalism and Documentary Photography
Scenography – Costume – Experimental Design
Step 2
On the respective homepage you can also find the application for admission to the artistic admission procedure and the declaration of consent for the storage of your data. Please print out both documents as well as your curriculum vitae, sign them and send them by post by 15 March 2021 to:
Hochschule Hannover
Fakultät III, Abteilung Design und Medien
Expo Plaza 2

Step 3
Request a link to upload your documents at f3-aufnahmeverfahren-dm(at)hs-hannover.de. Upload your portfolio, motivation sketch or questionnaire there by 15 March 2021 at the latest.
After reviewing your application, portfolio, motivation sketch or questionnaire, you will be informed by post whether you have been admitted to our colloquium and will receive a homework assignment enclosed, which you must work on and upload by 10 May 2021. In the colloquium, you will meet fellow applicants, teachers from the degree programmes (the examination board) and students and have a short meeting to get to know each other.
Approximately four weeks after the colloquium, you will receive a letter with the score you achieved in the entrance exam. Once you have passed the entrance exam, you can apply for a place at university. To do this, you have to submit an application for admission to the degree programme to the Service Center – Academic Affairs at Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts. You will receive notification of acceptance or rejection by the end of July.
Good Luck!

To apply for a place in the Design and Media department you need:
- Abitur or Fachhochschulreife and
- proof of a special artistic aptitude. The proof of a special artistic aptitude is issued after successful completion of an artistic entrance examination conducted by the Department of Design and Media. In exceptional cases, i.e. in the case of outstanding artistic ability, this alone (without requirement 1.) may entitle the applicant to admission.
- A six-week access internship for the degree programmes Scenography-Costume, Interior Design, Fashion Design as well as Product Design.
- Applicants with foreign educational certificates (including those from EU countries) must also take special rules into consideration, which you can find out about here:

All Bachelor's degree programmes in the Department of Design and Media start exclusively in the winter semester. Admission to the degree programme requires, among other things, a special artistic aptitude, which is demonstrated in an artistic entrance exam. This takes place once a year in May.
We recommend that you take part in a portfolio/study consultation in good time before applying.
The application for admission to the exam, together with the required application documents (see below), must be submitted directly to the Department of Design and Media by 15 March 2021, 4 pm (in the case of postal dispatch, the date of receipt, not the postmark, is decisive).

Exemption from the practical examination is possible upon application for applicants who have already passed a corresponding examination, have completed a comparable degree programme or have studied at least two semesters in a comparable degree programme. This application shall be submitted by 15 March.
You can download the application for admission to the exam or for exemption from the exam here: Application for admission to the artistic entrance exam
In addition to the self-made work samples/homework submitted:
- The application (incl. photo)
- Curriculum Vitae
- Table of contents of the works in duplicate
Concerning the attachments:
Please do not enclose any certificates with your application. Please also refrain from using fast-feed binders. This will save you costs and make it easier for us to process your application. An incomplete application will be returned to you for correction.
The content and orientation of the work samples depend on the chosen field of study. You can find more information at the respective degree programme.
Photojournalism and Documentary Photography
Scenography – Costume – Experimental Design
Work samples that exceed the DIN A2 format cannot be accepted as a matter of principle. If originals do not fit into a folder, please document them, e.g. with photos. Please do not submit a CD instead of a portfolio (exception is the Media Design programme). Please do not submit rolls as a matter of principle!
After reviewing the submitted work samples, the university informs all applicants whether they will be invited to the practical exam. The invitation to the practical exam is accompanied by a homework assignment to be completed by the exam date. The practical exam usually lasts one day and includes a colloquium in which the result of the homework assignment is also presented. The commission awards a score on all parts of the admission procedure, which is essential for the allocation of study places.
After passing the entrance exam, the application for admission to the degree programme is submitted online to the Student Administration of the Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Attention: This does not apply to applications from prospective students with foreign education certificates!).
In principle, a passed entrance examination remains valid for the three following enrolment dates. The application for admission to the artistic entrance examination can be repeated at any time.
Admission requirements are the formal criteria that must be met for admission to a specific degree programme. According to § 18 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act, eligibility to study at a university of applied sciences is proven by:
- the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur)
- the general entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences (FOS degree or admission to the Abitur plus one year of practical training or promotion after grade 12 plus at least two years of vocational training), the matriculation examination or previous education recognised as equivalent by the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs (e.g. through a master craftsman's examination or the completed educational course "state-certified technician" or "state-certified business economist").
You can find a detailed overview of which school and vocational qualifications lead to a higher education entrance qualification on the pages of the "General Student Advisory Service" at the Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the pages of the Lower Saxony Student Advisory Service.
